Best Whey Isolate Protein for Lean Muscle 2023

best whey isolate protein

If you are like most fitness fanatics, you are always looking for the best whey isolate protein for lean muscle growth.

This is because we all know that whey isolate has the highest utilization rate across all protein powders.

But with so many whey protein options available in the supplements industry, how do you know which one is the best?

Alas, this article will clear the air for you and point you in the right direction for the best whey isolate protein for lean muscle growth in 2023.

But before we dive into our winner, let’s go over our evaluation process. Because if we didn’t use a rigorous evaluation process, then our recommendation would be just like Joe Shmoe’s advice.

The first thing to know is that we tested several of the best protein powders available.

Whey protein isolate powder is readily available in numerous retail and online locations since these are the supplements that you most likely have access to and are familiar with.

This ensures that the whey isolates protein candidates are qualified and trusted.

Next, we sampled and tested each whey isolate protein powder for each of the five criteria:

  • Grams of protein per serving
  • Carbs and sugars
  • Amino acids
  • Mixability
  • Flavor

Finally, we chose the one that met all our criteria as the best whey isolate protein powder for lean muscle growth in 2023.

Lean Biome

And that winner is: Jett Pure Whey Isolate Whey Isolate

But in case you want to see how the candidates stack up against one another, keep reading for our complete evaluation.

But first…

What is whey isolate protein?

Whey isolate protein is a concentrated form of liquid whey that has been further processed to remove fat and lactose, leaving it with 90-95% pure protein content.

This makes whey isolate protein the most utilized form of dietary supplement for muscle growth due to its high bioavailability.

In comparison to other popular sources of dietary proteins such as casein protein and soy protein, whey protein isolate has a significantly higher absorption rate.

This means that when ingested, it is more readily available for energy production and muscle growth in the body.

Whey protein isolate has a higher content of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which play an important role in aiding muscle growth and recovery.

Where does whey protein powder come from?

Whey protein isolate is derived from dairy cows. During the cheese-making process, the liquid part of raw milk (whey) is separated from the solid part (curd).

The whey is then subjected to a filtration process which removes most of its fat and lactose content, leaving it with 90-95% pure protein content.

Various artificial flavors and artificial sweeteners are sometimes added to the whey protein isolate powder, along with other functional food ingredients such as enzymes and probiotics.

High-quality whey isolate protein powder can be naturally flavored without the addition of artificial sweeteners.

What are branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)?

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are essential amino acids that must be obtained through diet or supplementation. They play a major role in muscle protein synthesis and help stimulate growth.

BCAAs also promote the release of energy into the bloodstream, making them perfect for helping to support intense workouts as well as aiding in post-exercise recovery. B

All this combines to make it one of the best choices for athletes looking to improve their performance or gain lean muscle.

Now that you have a better understanding of what whey isolate protein is, let’s take a look at our evaluation process and the contenders for best whey isolate protein for lean muscle growth in 2023.

Criteria #1: Grams of protein per serving

Our first criterion looked at how much protein per serving and the serving size. The higher the protein content per scoop, the more beneficial it is for muscle growth and recovery.

If the protein per serving is low, then the benefits of the protein powders are diluted and you are essentially consuming empty calories.

If your goal is lean muscle growth, you need to achieve two things with your protein powder:

  1. Maximize protein per serving
  2. Reduce carbs and sugar
  3. (Bonus) Maximize essential amino acids

Proteins are the first cells to be broken down in your body, so it is essential that you have a high intake of protein in your diet.

The general rule of thumb:

You must take in at least 1g of protein per pound of body weight daily. So if you weigh 180 lbs and your goal is to build lean muscle mass, then you need to take in 180 grams of protein per day, minimum.

Keep in mind, the bulk of your protein intake should be from meat, but you will likely need a high-quality whey protein to supplement your diet.

Pure whey protein isolate is going to be the highest quality protein you can take, which is why that is the type of protein powder we evaluated in this protein powder review.

Criteria #2: Carbs and sugar

The next criterion was the amount of carbs and sugar per serving. This is important for two reasons:

  1. The most common sources of protein contain high amounts of carbs and sugars, which can be detrimental to your health if consumed in excess.
  2. High levels of sugar can lead to insulin spikes, which will reduce fat loss over time.

No one wants that.

So, the lower the amount of carbs and sugar in each serving, the more beneficial it will be for your body composition goals.

We chose protein powders that had 5g of carbs or less per serving with minimal sugars in their nutritional profile as our recommendations.

This is a much-overlooked aspect of your whey protein powder supplement these days due to the range of available flavors.

A lot of people like the sweeter flavor profiles for taste such as vanilla peanut butter, chocolate peanut butter, cereal milk, Oreo, birthday cake, Marshmallow cream, french vanilla, salted caramel, cookies and cream, and many others.

While it is hard to avoid artificial flavors, you want to try to avoid protein powders that contain added sugar. Those sugars are going to work against your goal to lose weight and building muscle.

Criteria #3: Amino acids

The third criterion that we looked at was the amino acid content. A complete amino acid profile includes the nine essential amino acids for human health that your body cannot produce on its own and must be sourced from food or supplementation.

These 9 essential amino acids include

  • histidine
  • isoleucine
  • leucine
  • lysine
  • methionine
  • phenylalanine
  • threonine
  • tryptophan
  • valine

These amino acids are going to help build muscle and assist in muscle recovery since they are the essential building blocks of muscle tissue.

Criteria #4: Mixability

The fourth criterion was mixability. We want our protein powder recommendation to be easy to mix for a smooth shake every time.

The best way to test this is just by mixing up the product and seeing how quickly it dissolves in liquid. The perfect protein powder should dissolve almost immediately with minimal clumping or foaming.

If you have ever made a whey protein shake, you know how hard this can be sometimes. Not all whey protein powders are the same in this regard, so finding one that is easy to mix is important.

Otherwise, your time could be spent cleaning shaker bottles and you will dread drinking your protein powder shake.

Criteria #5: Flavor

The last criterion that we evaluated was flavor. We all like to enjoy our whey isolate protein shakes and the best way to do this is with a great-tasting shake.

Rather than search for the most appealing flavor (because there are a lot of options out there), we stuck with the most popular flavor that most people consume. Chocolate and vanilla flavors are the two most popular, so we chose to test chocolate.

This also ensured that we would be able to find the best whey protein isolate available since nearly every protein powder comes in a chocolate flavor.

But as you know, not all chocolate-flavored protein powders are the same.

The three candidates for best whey protein isolate

All three candidates are excellent choices for whey isolate protein powders for building lean muscle.

Candidate #1: Jett Pure Whey Isolate

Jett Pure Whey Isolate

(PLUS BCAA and preworkout FREE)

$207 for full stack

Jett Pure Whey Isolate is a relatively undiscovered protein powder that is only available as part of the Jett Pack supplement stack.

Jett is a supplement brand that was created to make purchasing the highest quality supplement stack easy for busy achievers looking for muscle growth.

Their stack contains three essential performance supplements: BCAAs, whey isolate protein, and pre-workout.

Their products are all gluten-free and do not contain any added sugars, so we knew right away these were great contenders for the best whey protein.

So let’s see how this whey isolates stacks up against our evaluation criteria.

Grams of protein per serving

Jett Pure Whey Isolate contains an astounding 25 grams of protein per serving. One serving is 29 grams, making the protein concentrate one of the highest on the market.

You may be thinking that there are other whey protein isolate supplements with higher grams of protein per serving, but what makes Jett better is their serving size.

The way most protein powders are able to market higher grams of protein per serving is by increasing the size of the scooper or making a serving more scoops.

Jett’s serving size is modest, meaning the protein concentrate is higher and there is more protein per serving.

Carbs and sugar

Jett Pure Whey Isolate has only 1 gram of carbs and no added sugar per serving. This makes it a great option for those looking to build lean muscle while reducing body fat percentage.

It is near impossible to have 0 grams of carbs, so 1 gram is definitely a low amount.

No added sugar is a huge selling point, so you know you are getting a high-quality protein powder.

Amino acids

Jett Pure Whey Isolate contains all 9 essential amino acids, which will help support muscle growth and recovery in the most effective way.

Beyond simply containing a complete amino acid profile, the amount of BCAAs within each serving is higher than most whey protein powders in the supplement market.

In fact, Jett Pure Whey Isolate contains more BCAAs and amino acids than most stand-alone BCAA supplements with 5.1 grams of BCAAs and 18.9 grams of amino acids.

Mixability

Jett Pure Whey Isolate is one of the most easily mixable whey protein powders on the market.

We found that it dissolved nearly instantly in liquid and had minimal clumping or foaming, giving us a smooth shake every time.

This was a delightful surprise to find how smooth the protein powder mixed. We tested with both water and milk and in both instances, it mixed great.

There was some clumping with milk, but far less than what you might see with most other protein powders.

Flavor

The flavor of Jett Pure Whey Isolate was surprisingly delicious. It has a smooth milk chocolate taste that is not too sweet, but still enjoyable.

Even after multiple shaker bottles, we were still enjoying this flavor. We noticed no strange aftertaste or chalky texture.

Candidate #2: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate

4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ on Amazon

$72.12

Optimum Nutrition is a well-known name in the supplement world and has an excellent reputation for quality.

So even before we tested this whey protein isolate, we knew it was going to be good.

Let’s take a look at how this whey protein powder stacks up against our criteria.

Grams of protein per serving

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate Chocolate Bliss has 25 grams of protein per serving.

One serving is 31 grams, slightly more than Jett Pure Whey Isolate, reducing the protein concentrate per serving. This is slightly lower than Jett Pure Whey Isolate, but still a good amount.

Carbs and sugar

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate has only 1 gram of carbs and no added sugars.

Again, this is a great amount of carbs for those looking to build lean muscle while reducing body fat percentage.

Amino acids

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate also contains all 9 essential amino acids which are important for muscle growth and muscle recovery.

This protein powder contains 5.5 grams of BCAAs per serving. Keep in mind, the serving size is slightly bigger, but it does contain a slightly higher concentrate of BCAA compared to Jett Pure Whey Isolate.

It is not clear if this protein powder contains essential amino acids or how much, so this may be a big downside to the supplement.

Mixability

We found that Optimum Nutrition’s whey isolate protein had excellent mixability. It mixed very quickly and smoothly in both water and milk with minimal clumping or foaming.

There was more noticeable clumping than compared to Jett, but overall fairly smooth in both water and milk.

Flavor

The flavor of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate was great. The chocolate taste was smooth and not too sweet, just like we found with Jett Pure Whey Isolate.

The chocolate was a much richer flavor, so if you want a stronger chocolate flavor, this protein powder may be for you.

Again, no strange aftertaste or chalky texture.

Candidate #3: Isopure

Isopure

4.6/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ on Amazon

$66.19 with Prime

$69.57

We tested the Dutch Chocolate flavor for Isopure Protein Powder. Isopure prides itself on being a clean whey protein isolate for muscle protein synthesis. Their website states “just pure naked whey protein powder”.

Their protein powders are competitive with the other whey protein candidates, so this is a great choice.

Let’s take a look at how this protein powder supplement stacks up against the others.

Grams of protein per serving

Isopure Protein Powder contains 25 grams of protein per serving. One serving is 33 grams, making the protein concentrate slightly lower than both Jett’s Pure Whey Isolate and Optimum Nutritions Gold Standard 100% Isolate

Carbs and sugar

Isopure Protein Powder has 1 gram of carbs and 0 added sugars per serving.

This makes it a great option for those looking to build lean muscle while reducing body fat percentage.

Amino acids

Isopure Protein Powder also contains all 9 essential amino acids which are important for muscle growth and repair.

The supplement has 5 grams of BCAAs per serving, slightly less than our other two contenders.

Mixability

We found Isopure Protein Powder to have very good mixability. It mixed quickly and smoothly in both water and milk with minimal clumping or foaming.

Flavor

The flavor of Isopure Protein Powder was decent. The chocolate taste was sweet, but not too overpowering.

We did notice a strange aftertaste and a slightly chalky texture to the shake, which put us off a bit.

Overall, we would rate Isopure Protein Powder as okay in terms of flavor. Not great, not bad either. It will do if you need a quick protein boost, but it’s definitely not our favorite.

🏆  The Winner

Jett Pure Whey Isolate

4.9/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

$58.70 today only

(PLUS BCAA and preworkout FREE)

$207 for full stack

Overall, the competition was neck and neck. All three options are great if your goal is to increase muscle mass and lose weight.

The protein content of each was high making each a great candidate for the best protein powder.

But with careful evaluation and tallying each point, we determined that the best whey protein isolate for building muscle without containing unwanted ingredients is definitely Jett Pure Whey Isolate.

This whey protein powder has more protein per serving, is gluten-free, doesn’t contain any banned substances or sugars, has a great amino acid profile, and comes in both chocolate and vanilla flavors without any artificial sweeteners.

Not to mention the tremendous value you get by being able to purchase this high-quality protein for less than the other two AND you get one of the best BCAAs on the market and a great pre-workout.

It is no wonder Jett supplements have seen so much success and are so popular with high-performance athletes.

Runner Up

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate

4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ on Amazon

$72.12

Our next choice is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate. This whey protein powder was a close second.

The whey protein concentrates was close to Jett, it too is gluten-free, has a complete amino acid profile, and makes a great protein isolate option.

It does offer a wider range of flavor options including rich vanilla, caramel ice cream, and mint brownie.

But it should be noted that some of those flavors do contain sugar, which makes them not an ideal choice for your protein intake.

Overall, still a great protein powder option and better than most protein supplements on the market.

Conclusion

Whey protein isolate is the best choice for protein supplements. Far better than any plant-based protein powder, soy protein, casein protein, or vegan protein powder.

Whey protein powder has the highest protein concentrate per serving and contains digestive enzymes that help with muscle protein synthesis, characteristics not found in other forms of protein powder.

For this reason, the best protein powders with be whey protein isolate and are the supplement of choice for those serious about building muscle, adequate protein intake, and finding the best whey protein available in 2023.

Our recommendation is to stick with these proven muscle-building protein powders and steer clear of lower quality, underperforming vegan protein powder or plant-based protein.

While those may seem “healthier” they have actually been proven to offer less nutritional value and support to help build muscle.

Plant-based protein powder is really only a good option if you have lactose intolerance or your main goal is not to build muscle.

An alternative to whey protein powder would be sports egg white protein. This will allow you to get a high-quality protein without the lack of nutrients that a plant-based protein powder has.

Hopefully, you found this article helpful in selecting your next whey protein powder and you have been able to pick out the best whey protein isolate for your muscle gain.
